On-stage with with "Lollipop Kid" Jerry Maren and wife Elizabeth accepting the "Golden Halo" Award

November 21, 2010- The "Wizard of Oz Festival" at Hollywood Cinemas outside Chicago last weekend was an overwhelming success. Not only did I pick up the prestigious "Golden Halo Award" from "Lollipop Kid" Jerry Maren and his wife, Elizabeth (the thrill of a lifetime!) but I had the pleasure of meeting many new "Oz" friends and greeting so many old ones. Artist Joe Shipbaugh and his body of work were enthusiastically received.

29th Annual Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival

Rick Ewigleben and John Fricke

Pair of Oz Celebs easier to find at Chesterton Oz Fest this year . . .

Chesterton, IN – Two Oz celebrities have teamed up this year to make it easier for fans to find them at the 29th Annual Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival on September 17, 18 & 19, 2010.  Poster artist and illustrator Rick Ewigleben and Emmy Award winning producer/author/Oz historian John Fricke will share booth spaces 33 & 34 on Saturday and Sunday.  The spaces are near the center of the festival on Broadway in front of Chase Bank.  On Friday, Fricke will host the opening ceremony at 4:30 p.m. in Thomas Centennial Park which will include the unveiling of a new poster by Ewigleben.   Both say they are eager to meet and greet festival goers.  “Whenever we aren’t at an activity planned by the Oz Fest Committee on Saturday and Sunday,” explains Ewigleben, “you can find us at our booths.”

Ewigleben is excited to be a part of the celebration of everything Oz again in historic downtown Chesterton, Indiana.   Ewigleben was an official Munchkinland Market Days celebrity for six years and was warmly welcomed at many Oz Festival events as well.  Produced by the Yellow Brick Road Gift Shop the same weekend as the Oz Festival, Munchkinland Market Days was discontinued when the shop closed.   “It was great,” says the nationally renowned graphic artist, “when I was asked to be a part of the new Oz Festival last year and even greater to be asked back this year!”  Ewigleben will unveil the eighth poster in the limited edition Ewigleben Wizard of Oz series exclusively at the Wizard of Oz Festival.  In 2003, Rick began a series of Oz Tribute posters created in the poster-art style of the late 1930’s and early 1940’s.  Each poster in the limited edition series has become a sought after item by not only Oz collectors, but also by poster collectors and movie memorabilia fans.

John Fricke has been a friend/consultant to the Chesterton Wizard of Oz Festival for 20 years and is delighted to be asked back again.  Widely acknowledged as the preeminent Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland author/historian, John Fricke received a 2004 Emmy Award as co-producer of the two-hour, PBS-TV "American Masters" program, Judy Garland: By Myself.  This was his second recognition by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences; he won similar honors in 1997 as co-producer and co-writer of the A&E "Biography" special, Judy: Beyond the Rainbow, based on his book, Judy Garland: World's Greatest Entertainer (Henry Holt, 1992). He is also a Grammy Award nominee for "Best Album Notes" for the Capitol compact disc, Judy Garland: 25th Anniversary Retrospective (1996).  Most recently, Fricke was a major participant in the autumn 2009 Warner Home Video Blu-ray DVD release of The Wizard of Oz, serving as author of the mini-coffee table book included in the packaging and as creative consultant for many of the other Oz "extras."  The discs include his on-camera appearance or behind-the-scenes participation in six of the eight accompanying documentaries, as well as his narration and hosting of the audio track commentary.  The Oz set won numerous “best of 2009” designations.  He performed some of the same duties for the 2010 Blu-ray edition of Garland's A Star Is Born.   In 2007, he consulted on the deluxe DVD release of the musicals Judy Garland made with Mickey Rooney, and worked as well on two other new-to-DVD Garland motion picture projects.  He also appears in two "making of..." documentaries and wrote the copy for both the 50-page book included in the lavish Garland/Rooney packaging as well as the text for Mickey Rooney's on-camera introductions.  Fricke has another hit on his hands with the release last year of The Wizard of Oz:  An illustrated Companion to the Timeless Movie Classic (Becker & Mayer!, 2009) co-authored with Jonathan Shirshekan.
